Michel Legrand, the acclaimed pianist and composer, celebrates his 80th birthday at the end of March with a special concert in Bristol. The evening is part of the Filmic Festival of Film and Music curated in part by Phil Johnson, jazz writer at The Independent.
The event takes place at St George’s on Saturday 31st March and will feature Legrand in collaboration with his wife, the celebrated harpist Catherine Michel. They’ll be playing music from throughout Legrand’s varied career. Click here for more information.
Legrand has long been one of the go-to arrangers and accompanists for jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Stan Getz and John Coltrane, as well as composing a number of jazz-friendly standards such as ‘Windmills Of Your Mind’, ‘The Summer Knows’, ‘Watch What Happens’, ‘What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life’ and ‘I Will Wait For You’. In 1958, Legrand collaborated with Davis, Coltrane, Evans, Phil Woods, Ben Webster, Hank Jones and Art Farmer on the famous album ‘Legrand Jazz’. He also arranged Getz’s 1972 album ‘Communications ’72′ and worked with Davis on the score for the 1991 film ‘Dingo’.
The triple-Oscar-winner has also composed the memorable scores for over 200 films including work by Clint Eastwood (‘Breezy’), Joseph Losey (‘The Go Between’), Louis Malle (‘Atlantic City’), Orson Welles (‘F For Fake’), Robert Altman (‘Pret A Porter’) and Jean-Luc Godard (‘Vivre sa Vie’).
